Brave New World, Chapter 1

  1. T- What I have read I. This chapter was very disturbing for many reason. First the fact that humans don't mate naturally is quiet astonishing they are rather selectively breed for there purpose and engineered to love and enjoy the social status.
Ex-" ninety- six identical twins working ninety- sex identical machines".pg 4
T- Why would human want to unnatural produce human? because of this they can breed naturally why what if theology fail.
Y- This next really made me thing of Nazi Germany for the reason being the are creating the flawless human. Flaws are what make us human and unque. This really upsets me for the fact I believe in people expressing there unique ways and enjoying there lives.

  2. T- In the first chapter, it talks about how humans are made with machines. with all the fertilazation and budding. It got a bit confusing.
EX- "The principle of mass production at last applied to biology."pg. 4
T- When did the world decide that it was a good idea to start doing this?
Y- This made me feel that we have gone into a different world that is just messed up.

  3. t- From what i read i find it creepy that the humans were so engineered and controlled by there creators.
ex-""And this," said the director opening the door, "is the fertilizing room.""(Huxley 1)
t-I think that with all this technology it will eventually get out of hand and bad things will happen so why are the scientists still thinking this is a good experiment?
y-This reading makes me mad. Because you always see movies that have the same plot and you know it will never end well so it is just is frustrating to read about this GREAT idea.

  4. T- This chapter was all about the creation of human beings in a pure scientific way. It described a very complex way of fertilization of the embryo.
EX- "that is the secret of happiness and virtue-liking what you've got to do."(Huxley 10)
T- What is the importance of producing human beings to be all the same?
Y- I didn't like reading about how humans have figured out how to make human without flaws. I would hate to live in a society where I would have to be like everybody else. Part of being human is being able to be different and unique.

  5. T-Chapter One was basically about how humans were generated from machines including budding, fertilization, etc.
E- "Community, identity, Stability." Grand words. "If we could bokanovskify indefinitely the whole problem would be solved. pg 4
T-How did they come up with the ideas that they did? like the budding or the idea of 96 being the limit?
Y- This could relate to me if i pursue my desire for science. But i think it's kind of weird how we, as humans, can dictate genes and stuff for future people. . FRAKEAY!!

  6. T: The first chapter goes on explaining the engineering and creating of humans. The fact they were made by technology and machines. The rooms and "stations" they went through.
E: "one by one the eggs were transferred from their test tubes to the large containers"(p. 5)
T: I wonder if when Huxley was writing this book if he really considered that this was possible? That humans can be made on a conveyor belt.
Y:This does make me feel weird, considering the advancements in technology so far, and considering that this is a complete possibility .

  7. T: When reading chapter 1 i was discusted on how humans were created. It was odd that we were made by technology instead of the "natural way".
E: Huxley said, "Identical twins-but not in piddling twos and threes as in the old viviparous days, when an egg would sometimes accidentlly divide; actually by dozens, by scores at a time".(page 3)
X: That is just so weird because there can be identical twins but instead of two or three, twelve. This just discusts me.
T: What is the need to create life with technology? We won't even be human anymore.
Y: This does not relate to me, unless i go into a field of science, but i this chapter made me feel very odd and uncomfortable because of how humans are produced in such a weird manner.

  8. T- This chapter is about people creating humans with machines.
EX- "Bokanovsky’s Process is one of the major instruments of social stability!"
T- It really makes me curious if someday human will actually be brought to life this way?
Y- This is pretty creepy.. it bothers me that this could actually happen.

  9. T- I read about how humans were created, it was purely scientifically. They were made by machines and predestined, just like in Gattaca.
EX- " [...] Explained the system of labeling- a T for the males, a circle for the females and for those who were destined to become free martians a question mark, black on a white ground." (Huxley,8)
T- Why is it so uncommon to be born the natural way? You don't need perfect people.
Y- This does not relate to me because I was not "engineered", this could possibly happen in the future though.

  10. T- I read about the factory where humans are engineered in the future. There was an in depth description of the process an egg takes to become human.
EX-"Bokanovsky's Process is one of the major instruments of social stability!" (Huxley 4)
T- Who decided this was a smart idea?
Y- This reading made me fear for the future. It also made me mad because i hate when teachers assign homework on the weekend.

  11. The chapter is about how they make babies to be suitable for what they are going to do in life. "Nothing like oxygen-shortage for keeping an embryo below par" (Huxley 9). Why do you purposely try to make a caste of people "below par" if it would be better for them to all be well of? This reminds me of the Holocaust because it sounds like the Director is trying to make people like him the ideal human like the Nazis tried to do.

  12. The first chapter began with a tour of the "human factory". It was very eerie, and I really enjoyed it, as I have always been a fan of this kind of theme for a novel. My question, is how did we as a race get to this so called "Utopian" state. I can not wait to further read and learn how this came to be. This relates to me because I have always loved themes such as this, and society could always head in this direction.

  13. T:Chapter one was the explination of the humans, in the Brave New World the humans were engineered with technology by the machines.
E:"The shorter the oxygen. The fist organ affected was the brain." (P.9)
T:Huxley and his ideas are they possible in the future? we have come along way since the birth of man.
Y:This relates to me because the movies like "Gattica" and this book intrest me very much, the fact that we might be able to do this one day.

  14. T= I read about the phase of human life, where people stop having children and the worlds population is created within a test tube.
E=standard man and women; in uniform batches"(4). This reminded me much a Gattica and the lower class of an elite world.
T= Question is how do they tell people apart because of all the clones and twins?
Y= This relates to me because the book depicts the future and I am apart of the future, maybe one day we will be forced to do something like this.

  15. T-I learned about Bokanovsky's ptocess, which is how they make babies.
Ex-"Bokanovsky's process is one of the major instruments of social stability!" (Huxley, 4)
T-Why would they want to do this in such an unnatural way?
Y-This reading makes me feel like the world is less personal and too technological.

  16. T- This Chapter is about making babies in a factory.
EX- "After which they are sent down to the embryo store." (Huxley, 6)
T-How does it help society to have 96 of the same person?
Y-Reading this makes me feel crazy.

  17. T-This chapter talks about the Bokanovsky's process and how they make allot of babies at one time.
EX-"that is the secret of happiness and virtue-liking what you've got to do."(Huxley 10)
T-I dont understand why they have to make so many babies and why the process is so wierd.
Y-I honestly do not think i am going to like this book very much.

  18. T- To make the lower classes they give them alchol and deprive them of oxygen.
EX- Oxygen deprivation and alcohol treatment ensure the lower intelligence and smaller size of members of the three lower classes.
T- couldnt that kill the babys?
Y-I personaly think that what they are doing is messed up
