Brave New World Chapter 5

  1. T: The main thing I picked out while reading is how eventhough there are different "classes" each person is still significant.
EX:"Every one works for every one else. We can't do without any one. Even Epsilons are useful.." page 49
T: Why are their "classes" so segregated and taught differently, exc. if they are all so useful?
Y: I actually like this book!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. T-The chapter really digs into the "orgy" part of the book.
Ex-"All men are physico-chemically equal," said Henry sententiously.
T- Why does the entire postulation do Soma do they just know no other way to get by?
Y- This reading was kinda graphic it really opened up with the graphicness.

  3. t- i think that it is weird how all the people are so committed to ford and are worshipping him way too much.
ex-"The president made another sign of T and sat down"P.54
t-Why are the people following Ford so intensly?
y-This reading was pretty shocking. The descriptions and songs that they sung were weird.

  4. t-bernard and lenina attend an orgy which is induced by taking a soma tablet with soma ice cream
    ex-orgy porgy, ford and fun
kiss the girls and make them one
boys at one with girls at peace
    orgy porgy gives release
t-how does collecting ash from crematoriums allow them to make phosphorous?
y-in this utopian/dystopian society, do std's exist? it seems like a government regulated orgy is wrong in the first place, especially if you can acquire std's from them

  6. T: i don't like how the gammas know they are better.
EX: "all men are created physico-chemically equal" pg. 49
T: why would they create a lower class if they can just produce gammas?
Y: i really don't like how the people cant change what class they are in and their whole lives are pretty much planned for them.

  7. T-Bernard and Lenina attend an orgy which is induced by taking a soma tablet with soma ice cream
Ex: "boys at one with girls at peace; orgy- progy gives release."
T- is taking the Soma a requirement?
Y- this does not relate to me because i have not had an "orgy!"
    Thank you!

  8. T- This is an interesting chapter a lot of things are random in this chapter like how they make phosphorous at crematoriums and how they have drug induced orgies really I think of rome when i read this chapter.
EX- ..."soma had raised a quite impenetrable wall between the actual universe and their mind". pg 52
T- Here i thought these people did'nt need sex, is is know just pure recreational?
Y- This Chapter left me very confused about what these people really believe in i goes back and forth between chapters.

  9. Bernard ends up feeling very different and non belonging to society, with the sex orgies that he must attend to every week.
Ex: "Orgy Porgy ford and fun, kiss the girls..."(huxley pg 57)
T: I do not understand pushing people into making them have orgies, even when uncomfortable.
Y: This is not related at all in my life, i feel as if this book it a little to extreme.

  10. t- This chapter was about Bernard and Lenina going to an orgy induced by soma. Also, it is weird how much they are segregated and viewed upon their group.
ex-"Every one works for every one else. WEe can't do without any one. Even Epsilons are useful. We couldn't do without Epsilons." (huxley, pg 49)
    t-what's the deal the t?
y-i kind of hope our future doen't act like this becuase i don't really like how strict and segregated it is. also, it's weird how every one is perfect, no has flaws.

  11. T- Lots of sex and drugs
    EX- "Everybody's happy now" p50
T- Why does everyone have to have a drug induced orgy every week. to me its wrong and really weird.
Y- i don't get the obsession with sex and sleeping with hundreds of people.

  12. T: Lenina and Bernard are required to attend an orgy. Bernard feels like an outcast of society.
Ex:" The group was now complete, the solidarity circle perfect and without flaws."(Huxley pg 53).
T:Why make and insist that people do this?
Y:This does not relate to me at all. I agree with Jackie this book might be a little extreme!

  13. T: That it doesn't matter if the Alphas and Betas don't want Epsilons or any under class, because you can't do anything with out them.
EX:"Every one works for every one else. We can't do without anyone. Even Epsilons are useful." (Huxley) 49
    T: Why are they druged?
Y: I hope that the future doesn't turn into anything like this cause then that would be messed up and wrong in so many ways.

  14. T- I read about Henry and Lenina's date and Bernard's orgy, both of which involved a lot of soma.
Ex-"The warm, richly coloured, infinitely friendly world of soma-holiday.
T- Why are such immoral things acceptable in this society?
Y- This reading made me fear for the future. Drugs are bad.

  15. T-The second part of chapter 5 was a description of Bernard's day, which happened to be a 'Solidarity Service' day. At a solidarity service, 6 boys and 6 girls are required to sit in a cicle and drink strawberry ice cream out 'the loving cup' and take soma and then have an 'orgy-porgy.' Bernard doesn't really enjoy the service and actually feels lonely and miserable after the whole ordeal.
EX-"He was as miserably isolated...more isolated by reason of his unreplenished emptiness, his dead satiety. Separate and unatoned...much more alone, indeed, more hopelessly himself that he had ever been in his life before" (Huxley 57).
T-Bernard's attitude towards the Solidarity Service meeting reminded me of what I imagine an AA meeting to be like--a requirement for certain people who have addictions frowned upon by society. So does that mean abstinance is viewed as an unruly behavior deserving punishment?
Y- I find this topic very ironic. In modern society, we are conditioned to believe two things. First, drugs are terrible; and second, sex is a special way of showing compassion and bonding with one significant other you are attracted to and love. The Solidarity Service is the exact opposite. I find it funny that Bernard has sex with Morgana when he is utterly repulsed by her and completely distracted by her unibrow.

  16. T- Chapter 5 was about a sex orgy and how bernard doesnt feel like he is apart of the society.
EX-"Orgy porgy, Ford and fun, Kiss the girls and make them One."(Huxley 56)
T- Why are they pounding down the soma and having orgy's? Where is Huxley going with this book?
Y- I dont relate to this because i've never had an orgy and it made me feel really awkward reading this chapter.

  17. T-Chapter 5 is about Lenina and Henrey's night and then the chapter talks about Bernard and how he lied because he had heard nothing and nobody was coming for him.
Ex- "Twelve of them ready to be made one, waiting to come together, to be fused, to lose their twelve seperate identities in a larger being" (53).
    T-Why is Bernard different?
Y-This reading made me feel like Huxley's view of a utopia is different from my view of a utopia.

  18. T- They used burned bodies for fertilizer... I don't know if this is creepy, or genius...
Ex- "Fine to think we can go on being socially useful even after we're dead."
T- Why, if this is a utopia, do they relish the thought of cremation and down soma like its freakin' water?
Y- This in no way relates to me. I've never been in a soma induced orgy, let alone flying a helicopter over the place where everyone goes to die and then think how cool it was.

  19. At the beginning of chapter 5, Henry talks about the different castes. He says " All men are physico-chemically equal" (Huxley 49). Why are there castes if they are all equal? I can relate to this because in school, there are popularity castes and the higher castes don't like the lower ones although we are all equal.

  20. A very interesting twist to the future and one that I probably do not have any trouble looking forward. I wonder if soma or a drug like this was a problem in the 1930's? "every one works for every one else. We cant do without any one."(Huxley 49). This was a cool quote that clearly related to a "socialist" society. This relates to the sex movements through history and how even in the future sex is still a major factor in society and always will be.

  21. T - Lenina is happy with the class she is in and is always talking about how she is so glad she's not in a lower class.
Ex - "Im glad I'm not an epsilon,"
T - Why are the upper classes so thankful for not being in a lower class but the lower classes do not aspire to be upper classes?
Y - I hope our world does not become this one day...it's not right.

  22. From what I read, the soma pill or soma ice cream is a sex drug. I'm not sure if that's exactly what it is, but they clearly have it before the "orgy" that follows. Huxley writes, "Soma had raised a quite impenetrable wall between the actual universe and their mind" (p52). How can they understand sex, but not the old way of parenthood with a father and a mother? Today, we see more sex, however it is usually with couples. This world seems to go about freely, and not have the couples relationships.

  23. T- Wow orgy time.
Ex-"Every one works for every one else. We can't do without anyone. Even Epsilons are useful." (Huxley) 49
T-Why do they wish they want to be in a different class then what they are in if this is supposed to be a perfect society.
Y- THis has no relation to me. This book is weird.

  24. HAHAHAHAHAHA yeah Mr. Macy i was so right about Henry and lanina going to have a massive orgy but yet this is kind of strange how in earlier in the book they kids/interns were disgusted by the term of father and mother yet they condone with lots of sex "everyone belongs to everyone." i mean what do they even do about sexually transmitted diseases.

  25. The beginning of this chapter the main character Henry and Lenina are exposed, Bernard explains his day of the "Orgy-Porgy" the song follows "Orgy porgy, Ford for fun, Kiss the girls and make them one. Boys at one with girls at peace. Orgy-Porgy gives release. Im not really understanding the higher casts being thankful for not being a lower class, is this because of the alpha characteristics attract other alphas. The future is scary, orgys are very concerning this world is slowly emerging into this world we read about in BNW

  26. T- In Chapter five, the book says that Lenina and Henry go on a date and then it talks about Bernard.
EX- "Besides, even Epsilons perform indispensable services."
T- In the second part of the chaptrer, it reminds me of more of a satanic ritual. Is this new religion a base of satanism?
Y- This was very very strange to read.

  27. T-In chapter five Lenina and Henery got to this thing where they have to sit in a circle and drink this juice and then they have this thing called an "orgy-porgy"
EX-"Orgy porgy, Ford and fun, Kiss the girls and make them One."(Huxley 56)
T-I honestly do not understand why anyone would want to do this.
Y-This book is very very strange to me and i cant decide if i like it or not.

  28. T: I read about Henry and Lenina going obstacle golfing and then to Henry's apartment. Later, they go to an orgy and have soma and soma icecream.
    EX:"Orgy-porgy, Ford and fun,
Kiss the girls and make them One.
Boys at one with girls at peace; Orgy-porgy gives release" (Huxley, 57)
T: Why do they need to perform orgies?
Y: I do not relate to this because I do not consume soma or participate in orgies.

  29. T- so everyone gets messed up on soma and has orgies.
EX-Orgy-porgy, Ford and fun,Kiss the girls and make them One.Boys at one with girls at peace;Orgy-porgy gives release.
T- so they have orgies to relieve stress, and keep everyone happy?
Y- I feel that this part is realy weird.

  30. T: This chapter is very bizarre. Everyone has a giant orgy and it doesn't even phase them that they just saw their commrades completely naked. It reminds me of the scene in "Sleeper" with Woody Alan where they have a machine called a sex machine which gives you pleasure without even needing a partner. I don't understand why Huxley put this much graphic detail into this chapter.
Ex: "beating it, beating it out with hands on the buttocks in front; twelve pairs of hands beating as one; as one, twelve buttocks slabbily resounding" (Huxley 56).
T: I wonder if there is a deeper meaning to this chapter like it suggests that maybe Huxley was a sex addict.
Y: This part is extrememly vivid in detail
